Background
Thriftknd, founded by Brittany Rivkind, is a vintage and pre-owned apparel retailer aiming to minimize the detrimental effects of the fast fashion industry by offering the most unique collection of handpicked thrifted apparel inspired by the 70s, 80s, 90s, and early Y2K.
An online business over the past 3 years, Brittany built a strong presence on Instagram auctioning her pieces virtually. In the spring of 2022, Thriftknd opened its first retail space in Sag Harbor, NY. Brittany came to me with a concept for a poster series to decorate the walls of her new store.
Concept
Taken from @thriftknd’s Instagram, we curated some of Brittany’s favorite posts over the years to transform into posters for the store. Inspired by vintage Playboy magazines, Brittany had a pretty clear vision of how these should play out; each poster should feature “THRIFTKND” as the header, with the copy of the cover being the exact descriptions used on the post.
Execution
While each poster has its own unique message, they were all designed under the idea that they exist as part of a series. Color and typographical decisions were derived from a combination of the garments themselves, as well as from inspiration of the era in which they are from. The edition of each cover correlates to the month/date that the original auction was posted. The barcode at the corner of each poster represents the date Thriftknd was founded.
I wanted each piece to exude the same confidence, and bad-ass voice of the brand:
