Step-by-Step Construction Guide

Now comes the fun part!

Step 1: Planning Your Garden Bed Layout

Measure and mark the desired size and shape of your raised garden bed. Consider the location, lighting, and spacing between beds. TIP: Keep at least 24-36 inches between each garden bed, ensuring that there is enough space to walk between!

Step 2: Assembling the Frame

Start by laying all of your cut wood on the ground.

  • Construct the sides: Lay two of the 4×4 posts on the ground, spaced three feet apart. Next, lay two 3-foot planks parallel to each other, on top of the 4×4 posts. Screw each plank into the 4×4 posts. Repeat for the other side of the garden bed. Space each side eight feet across from one another.
  • Construct the frame: Now that your sides are constructed, it’s time to affix the 2×12 8-foot planks to the front and back of the garden bed. Turn the side pieces so that they are standing upright. An extra set of hands would be helpful here!
    • With the 4×4 posts facing the interior of the garden bed, line the first 8-foot plank up with the bottom corners of each post. Screw this plank into the posts. Both side boards should now be connected.
    • Repeat on the opposite side of the bed.
    • You should now have two 8-foot planks remaining. Lay one of these on top of the sides you just screwed into the posts. You should now have three complete sides of your garden bed.
    • Repeat on the opposite side.

Step 3: Placing the Garden Bed
Position the frame in your chosen location, making sure it’s level and stable.

Step 4: Filling with Soil and Compost
Filling a bed that is 24 inches deep with just soil and compost will add up quickly. To keep this project budget-friendly, first layer cardboard on the bottom surface of th ebed to act as weed mat (this will eventually decompose!). Next, begin to fill the bed with brown material (think: sticks, branches, leaves, etc.). You can fill as much as 50% of the bed using materials you have in your backyard and/or woods! Finally, fill the rest of the bed with a mix of quality soil and compost, creating a fertile growing environment. As the brown materials at the bottom decompose, you will need to top off the bed each growing season with a fresh layer of soil and compost.

Conclusion:

With your newly constructed raised garden bed, you’re ready to embark on a journey of gardening success. Enjoy the benefits of elevated gardening and relish the fruits (and veggies) of your labor.
